Many of us are already planning changes to help us live our best lives in 2023. These include quitting bad habits, getting more exercise, and eating healthier. It's wonderful to shoot for the stars, but don't lose sight of the fact that it's the simple things, like a makeover, that mean the most. You may find that doing something quick, visually interesting, and simple like making a significant adjustment to your beauty routine, can boost your state of mind. It could be helpful to give your hair a trim, especially with the promising trends in 2023.

We've spoken with professional and celebrity hairstylists, and here's what we've discovered about the trends you'll see on the red carpet and in your social media feeds this year. Some trends may be familiar to you from past years (looking at you, wolf haircut), while others might shake things up and take them in a new direction. Here are the 2023 haircut styles we believe will be the most popular.

7 Short Hairstyles to Try for a Fresher 2023

Soft Bob

A more relaxed and laid-back version of the traditional, more structured bob haircut is known as the "soft bob." This type of cut will let you enjoy the flow and texture of your hair, compared to the typical clean lines and straight edges of a bob. This haircut is perfect for individuals who have fine hair but want to add some texture and movement to it. It also looks great on those who have a natural wave in their hair.

Blunt Bob

The blunt bob is another trendy hairstyle to sport in 2023. People are becoming more experimental with their hairstyles, so the blunt bob will continue to be quite trendy in 2023. This style requires cutting off a significant amount of hair depending on length, defining and enhancing your facial structure.

Experiment with your hair's natural texture and go for undone, textured waves. We recommend curling your hair in inch-wide portions. After curling the hair, give it an "undone" appearance by running your fingers through it and adding a texture spray, like Après Sexe Texture Spray or the traditional Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, for extra body and grit. You should be able to maintain this appearance throughout the day (and all night).

’90s Mid-Length

Beauty trends from the 1990s continue to reign supreme. According to predictions, the popularity of the mid-length cut that dominated the fashion scene in the 90s will prevail. For picture inspiration, we suggest thinking about Neve Campbell in the movie "Scream." Try using a product like MoroccanOil's Dry Texture Spray to give depth to the style.

Short Wolf Cut

This is the hairstyle Joan Jett would have,  if she decided to become a fashion model in the year 2023. Even though the rock-and-roll shaggy wolf cut has been popular for quite some time, the shorter length provides the look of a contemporary update for the new year (see: Billie Eilish, patron saint of wolf cuts). According to celebrity hairdresser Nunzio Saviano, this style is "the best cut to bring out your hair's natural texture." It may be worn with or without bangs, either straightened with a blow dryer or curled with a curling iron, and it is versatile enough to do all three. Channel your inner Joan Jett or Billie Eilish when you wear this look.

The Bixie

What do you get if you combine one part pixie and two parts bob, shaking but not stirring, and adding a dash of punk rock? The Bixie. It resembles a mullet, but the top is cut shorter than the back.  Jessica Page, a hairdresser located in Salt Lake City, recommends that clients "ask their stylist to pick a pleasing length with face-framing layers." She goes on to say that in order to keep the length and avoid it seeming too much like a mullet or a punk haircut, you will need to have a trim every six to eight weeks.

French Bob

A bob is a specific kind of short haircut, which differs from other types of short haircuts in that it often ends somewhere about the chin area of the head. A French bob is similar, except it has a galette and Dom Perignon beforehand. The primary distinction (other than the diet of puff pastry and champagne) is the pageboy length of the hair, noticeably shorter than the standard length of a bob and typically comes to a finish somewhere between the chin and the ear lobe. The diet of puff pastry and champagne is not the primary distinction, but the pageboy length of the hair is. This flirty length with the addition of short bangs is Saviano's preferred method of wearing the hairstyle, but it can be worn in an endless number of other ways, as Saviano points out.
