Moms in Filipino culture are often called the ilaw ng tahanan or the light of the home for the guidance, clarity, and direction they provide in the family. The job can get taxing – especially when you are juggling things between your relationship with your partner and your children. It can sometimes test your patience, but it’s important to keep a level head and to solve problems and not add to them.

Moms, not only are you the lights of your households but you are also queens in your own right. Parenting and managing your marriage can be hard, so it’s important to learn how to prolong your patience as a partner and a mom.

That said, here are a couple of ways that you can manage parenting and your relationships.

Parenting Guide: Prolonging Patience as a Mother

As mothers, patience is essential in raising our children. There are many ways to cultivate patience and here’s a summary of ways that you can do just that:

    Switch Perspectives

Look at the situation from your child’s perspective so you can understand it from their shoes. It’s essential for a patient parent to understand a certain situation when talking to a child because it’ll help them gauge the situation a bit more. For children, it can be a bit frustrating, especially since they don’t know how to express their feelings well; as parents, it’s essential to see the world from their perspective to respond accordingly.

    Take A Break

Sometimes, moms need a break too. Timeouts aren’t just for kids but they’re for parents as well. If you had a bad day or if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take some time for yourself so you can recuperate. Take some time off for your mental health, as a healthy mind is a key to becoming a patient parent.

    Ask For Help

As parents, we might resist the urge to ask for help. In reality, it’s alright to ask for help – especially when you’re getting overwhelmed. By asking for help from others, you will have both someones to share the task with and to take a breather from the tension.

    Refuel and Recuperate

You need to sustain yourself to have a healthy physical and emotional state. That said, don’t forget to eat your meals properly and meditate so you can sustain a level head while you’re handling children. In parenting, you will need all the energy you can get – especially if you’re handling multiple kids.

Wife Duties: Cultivating Patience in a Relationship

As partners, patience is necessary for a relationship to achieve a happy and healthy one. Patience, alongside communication and respect, is essential to keep a strong bond that will become the basis of a nurturing relationship.

If you need a bit of help in cultivating patience for yourself in a relationship, here are a couple of tips that you can practice:

    Practice Empathy

Patience in love requires empathy skills – these are useful skills for both romantic and platonic relationships. Empathy requires being able to understand things from your partner’s perspective and be able to honor them. This promotes a healthy emotional relationship and allows us to understand our partners better.

    Control Your Emotions

Sometimes, it’s difficult to control your emotions, especially when you are in the heat of the moment. However, controlling them would also mean being able to discuss problems and your feelings with your partner without letting your emotions get the best of you. Emotions can cloud judgment and it can often lead to bigger problems. Controlling your emotions also works for parenting problems to not make the problem worse.

    Acceptance is Key

Most of the time, being uncomfortable leads to impatience. Sometimes we find ourselves in uncomfortable situations with our spouses, but learning how to accept them is key to being a more patient partner. Spend some time talking to your partner and adjusting with each other to manage certain situations better.

Remember That You Love Each Other

Before getting uncontrollably angry at your partner, remember that there is a love that exists between the both of you. That said, patience needs to be practiced, especially when you are in the heat of the moment. Do not fight negativity with negativity, as this will only make matters worse. Patience and understanding of each other are a big factor in making sure that you can solve disagreements in the most effective way possible.

Parenting and managing your marriage can be difficult, but as moms and wives, you are the queens of the house – you are empowered to handle hurdles and challenges in your family. Prolonging your patience might get a bit tiring but it’s always worth it – especially when you can see that your family is happy.
