Your kids may not say a lot through words, but they communicate with you through different ways. Every child’s method of showing their love and appreciation is different from one another. This is because they each have their own so-called love language.

Do you know your child’s love language? Understanding how a child expresses his/her affection is important to have a positive relationship for parents and children. If in case you are still unaware of how your child communicates and expresses affection, here are things your child wants you to know and how they show it:

1. What they want to tell you: “I need you.”

How they show it: through physical affection

Some kids express affection through physical touch instead of through words. A random hug or cuddle means a lot to them. Physical affection is a unique way for children to communicate that they need their parents.  This is also their way of showing their love and appreciation for you! To reciprocate this love language, offer them high fives or a kiss on the cheek before they go to bed to let them know you love them too!

2. What they want to tell you: “I understand you.”

How they show it: through words of affirmation

It may be a surprise, but your child understands you and how you feel more than you know!  They express their understanding through words of affirmation and is also their way of telling you that they acknowledge your feelings. Kids who show their love and empathize through words are more vocal and more likely to say they care about you or appreciate having you as their mom. At the same time, they also like receiving compliments and praises back.

3. What they want to tell you: “I’m here for you”

How they show it: through spending time with you (quality time)

Another way kids show they love you is through spending time with you. Your child wants you to know that he or she is there for you by doing things with you, or simply being around you. Often, they may want to play games with you if they know you’re feeling down. This is their way of saying that you are not alone and they’re always there for you as you are there for them.

3. What they want to tell you: “Please take a rest.”

How they show it: through acts of service

Little do you know, your children sometimes know that you get tired from taking care of your family. They try to tell you that you need rest by doing simple acts of service, like getting you a glass of water or helping you out with household chores. This is their way of telling you to please take care of yourself just like how you take care of them.

5. What they want to tell you: “I love you.”

How they show it: through giving gifts

There are so many ways kids say they love you. One of them is showing their love and appreciation through simple gifts — it may be a handmade card or flowers they picked from the garden. They give gifts to tell you that they value you. Giving you gifts makes them happy, knowing that you enjoy their efforts in making you smile!

Understanding how your child expresses their affection is an important part of having a healthy parent-child relationship.  This also helps you express your love for them more effectively.
