On the eve of the pandemic, many schools transitioned to online learning. Kids and parents have to adjust according to the changing times and the demands of online learning and virtual schooling. While it can be stressful parents and kids need to adjust to the differences in learning styles and ways of learning.

That said, here are some tips to help manage online learning for parents and how they can take advantage of online distance learning.

    Online Learning Tips for Parents

For parents, online learning while managing their day-to-day chores or work can get stressful. It can be taxing to manage children while working on your own tasks for the day and that’s why we have prepared a couple of tips that you can add to your routine to make managing online learning easier for you and your kids.

Use the School’s Flexible Schedule to Your Advantage

Since some schools these days have adjusted their learning schedule, parents can use that to their advantage as they can schedule review times with their kids. It’s also convenient to use the school’s flexible schedule to make sure that you can check on your children if you’re free from doing any work. This also provides you with extra time in case your kids would need help in an activity or with their homework.

    Use Planning Tools

Create or use a planning tool you can integrate with your kids’ schedules and yours. This will help you manage your time accordingly and help them prepare for the subjects that they’ll have for a certain day. You can also teach your child to use the system independently so that they’ll know when they would need to go to classes or consultations.

    Create To-Do Lists

Similar to planning tools, a to-do list can help your kids accomplish more schoolwork without getting distracted. You can leave them with instructions while you’re at work so they can still finish their tasks. You can also use this system for household chores to keep your child on their feet while you’re working.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Help

Because more people are at home, you can ask help from family to help with monitoring your child during their classes. If you’re working, you’ll be able to make sure that your kids are taking part in classes and doing their homework. You can also take this time to ask your child’s teacher for help as they are more accessible because of online learning.

    Take Breaks

Do not be afraid to take breaks in between classes if need be. Like students, the parents also need to manage their time and take breaks. Online learning can be stressful for both the parents and the kids so taking breaks are essential to make sure that everyone is mentally well.

    Advantages of Online Learning

While online learning can prove to be a challenge to parents and kids, it also has its advantages, and these include:

    • Flexibility in time and learning environment
    • Online learning suits a variety of learning styles
    • Parents can be more involved in their child’s studies
    • Students can be more present during classes
    • Eliminates the hassle of traveling and commuting
    • It fosters more interaction between students, parents, and teachers
    • Online tools can provide real-time assessment and feedback

    Disadvantages of Online Learning

Of course, there are also disadvantages to online learning for both parents and kids. These might include:

    • Online learning requires self-discipline among students and might not work for younger kids
    • Students and teachers may encounter technical issues during classes
    • Online learning requires more screen time which might not be good for kids
    • Students may develop a sense of isolation

Online learning can be manageable, provided that parents have an excellent system to go by. It might be hard to manage learning and your kids at first but once you establish a great system, things will become much easier. Don’t be afraid to ask for help in establishing a manageable system for your family just in case you need help.
